On June 25, join East Africa Biodesign, a partnership between Alliance members Stanford Mussallem Center for Biodesign and University of Global Health Equity, for a virtual session: “What Does an African MedTech Innovator Need to Know About Regulatory Pathways?” Mpumi Mothapo, CEO of EL3M Consulting Services and ISO 13485 Lead Auditor will share how Quality Management Systems and regulatory compliance support medical device innovators from early development to market readiness.
On May 5th, 2026, the MERL Tech Initiative is hosting an event about tech-enabled community listening and the place of emerging technologies in this work. During this online gathering, the speakers will share their experiences regarding tech-enabled community listening and the place of emerging technologies, including AI, in their work.
The Africa HealthTech Summit (AHTSx) Canada 2026 will take place June 9–10, 2026 in Toronto. The summit will bring together leaders from across the health ecosystem—including innovators, policymakers, investors, clinicians, and researchers—to explore the future of connected care, digital health innovation, and partnerships for resilient health systems. The two-day convening will feature policy dialogues, innovation showcases, and collaboration opportunities connecting Africa, Canada, and the global health community.
For the third consecutive year, the Alliance convened a panel at the 2026 J.P. Morgan Healthcare Conference (JPM) in San Francisco, followed by an Alliance side meeting held at Accenture’s San Francisco Innovation Hub. This year’s panel brought together leaders from Gilead Sciences, U.S. Development Finance Corporation (DFC), Nivi, Inc., reach52, and Accenture to explore how pharmaceutical partnerships, development finance, and patient platforms are creating investable infrastructure in high-growth markets across Asia and Africa. The panel underscored that the most promising long-term opportunities in emerging markets lie not just in individual products, but in the systems and partnerships that connect them to patients.
On October 14, the Alliance organized a panel at the Africa HealthTech Summit in Kigali, Strengthening Primary Care Access: AI and Pharmacies, as part of its 2025 AI and Global Health Discussion Series, sponsored by Pfizer. The session brought together experts from Chan Zuckerberg (CZ) Biohub, Goodlife, The Global Fund, and the Society for Family Health (SFH) Rwanda to explore how AI can enable pharmacists to deliver comprehensive primary care services, particularly in low-resource settings, that extend far beyond medication dispensing.
On September 9, 2025, the Alliance hosted AI-Assisted Ultrasound: Bridging Innovation and Access in Low-Resource Settings as part of its 2025 AI and Global Health Discussion Series, sponsored by Pfizer. The panel brought together multi-sector perspectives from AMPATH Kenya, the Gates Foundation, the Global Ultrasound Institute (GUSI), Philips Ultrasound, and UCSF’s Bixby Center for Global Reproductive Health. Together, the expert panelists explored how AI-assisted ultrasound can transform care in low-resource settings while addressing the challenges of implementation. They discussed its potential to democratize diagnostics — making affordable imaging more accessible for maternal health, cancer, cardiovascular disease, tuberculosis, and other critical conditions where access is too often limited.
The Bay Area Global Health Alliance’s 2025 Annual Meeting on June 5 brought together a diverse community of leaders, innovators, funders, and implementers at a pivotal time for global health. Held under Chatham House Rules to encourage open, candid dialogue, the convening reflected the urgency and complexity of a sector facing major funding cuts. Despite the challenges, there was a strong call to action across the community — to do bold things and reimagine the future, acknowledging the millions of lives depending on it.
