AI Autonomy, Regionalization and Ethics
The Ethics and Governance Group at The MERL Tech Initiative’s NLP-CoP is hosting a conversation about AI autonomy, regionalization and ethics on May 25, 2026 at 7:00am PT | 10:00am ET | 4:00pm Harare | 10:00pm Singapore.
The conversation of “sovereignty” in relation to tech and AI has often been associated with notions of data sovereignty, state sovereignty, and autonomy, with often unclear and contradictory definitions of what it actually constitutes. Over the years, the language of sovereignty has served different ends: from Indigenous data sovereignty to AI nationalism(s) to digital sovereignty and more.
MTI will be joined by Chenai Chair (from Masakhane African Languages Hub), William Tjhi (from SEA-LION), Maria Luciano (LSE) and Wayan Vota (ICTworks).
