Over the past month, the Office of Management and Budget proposed a new rule that would change how federal grants are awarded. Instead of scientific peer reviewers, political appointees would make funding decisions, and grants could be canceled mid-study; the public comment period runs until July 13. Among other US government moves, Trump ordered federal agencies to align their policies behind an HHS study recommending fewer childhood vaccines; more than half of the NIH’s 27 institutes are being run by acting directors; and $10 million in aid-purchased contraceptives have been ordered to stay in storage rather than be distributed. Encouragingly, Washington has re-engaged with Gavi on malaria and Ebola and directed roughly $1 billion to UNICEF and the World Food Programme.
